FAAM has two types of free meal services. The first is food for encampments. The second is Lunches/Dinners.
For encampments, FAAM cooks street-food style dishes. We set up a pop up canopy, a stove, and a kitchen line to rapidly serve up to 200 people. All our dishes are vegan as animal rights are inextricable from human rights.
Our philosophy behind this is "Everyone Deserves Good Food!" There is classism, elitism, and absurd moralism around food and we think that is ridiculous. More expensive food does not mean better food, and being able to afford expensive food does not mean you are a better person. In our opinion, good food should be free for all and neither food scarcity nor food quality should be used as a carrot or a whip. Ever.
Why do we make street food style dishes? First of all, we make these on the street. Cooking in this environment benefits from rapid preparation and minimal equipment. Second, while street food is deeply slept on in the USA, it is a global cultural fixture. Quick, inexpensive, and delicious, sidewalk and neighborhood food carts and stands bring people together. There is a certain personal intimacy to street food. The proprietor is the chef, the order taker, the cashier, and they are right there in front of you! Cooking for you! Contrast this with the artificial formal environment of a restaurant dining room where the chef and cooks toil in some food dungeon, with your food presented by people who are treated by society as underclass servants.
We enjoy the face the face interaction with our customers- the unhoused, and have many great conversations while cooking. It's personally rewarding to give people food that is prepared to be the best it can be, without compromise. Volunteers: For our popups, we need help with prep the day before, prep the day of, plating, line assembly, and frying. It is a lot of intense work but it is very fun.
